In my work doing couples counseling, I am often surprised at how unskillful many of us are at intentionally creating emotional intimacy with those we care about.
I've found it useful to distinguish between three types of activities that can create intimacy:

1) Shared activity - side by side - here the focus is on the activity, but by doing it together we feel more connected. This can range from seeing a movie together, to going for a walk, to having sex. The distinguishing feature is that the focus is on doing the activity and the intimacy occurs on the sly. Men are often more comfortable with this sort of intimacy.

2) Emotional sharing - face to face - here the focus is on each person getting to share his or her experience and being understood by the other. Intimacy occurs directly through a deepening of verbal and emotional understanding of one another. Examples are talking on the phone, chatting over tea or dinner, or having a heart to heart talk. Women are often more comfortable with this style than are men.

3) Display - performer/audience - here the focus is on one person openly displaying themselves to one or more others. The intimacy created here is one-sided as one person is allowing him or herself to be seen or known and the other is the audience. Common examples are arts and performances of all kinds. Often the audience member can feel verty close with the performer, while the performer can know nothing about that person. This kind of thing also occurs in psychotherapy, other healing relationshiups and parenting. Men and women have differnent ways of doing this one. Realtionships can be made more intimate by taking turns with this one.

What is your experience creating intimacy? Might you be able to improve your relationships by using these on purpose?

why is it people default to sharing mundane facts about 3rd parties rather than having a deep personal conversation? oh, yawn!

I have so many friends who do that, and so few who get to the juicy soulful stuff.

Why must intimacy have an agenda?

Hi Leslie,
Sounds like for you intimacy does have an agenda - that is, that sharing the juicy soulful stuff promotes intimacy and gossip does not. That is my experience also.

Are there ways that you can influence the topic of converstaion through modeling or intentional inquiry? Are there ways that you can help your friends feel safer opening up with you?

I do not know what your answers are, but this might be a fruitful avenue of exploration.
wishing you intimate relationships,
Nando

Food - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Food is any substance, usually composed of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water, that can be eaten or drunk by an animal, including humans, for nutrition or pleasure. Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role.

Understand Consciousness, Part II: Foods | NaturalNews

As talked about in "Understanding Consciousness" part 1, a large part of our consciousness comes from our thoughts and thought patterns. But a large part of our consciousness also comes from what we put inside our bodies. The foods we eat literally affect our consciousness and probably more than most realize.

Take GM Corn off the Shelves! - The Petition Site | Care2

The shelves of our grocery stores are filled with genetically-modified (GM) vegetables, also known as Frankenfood. But what's scariest about Frankenfood is not simply that scientists are manipulating DNA, but that they are not testing it before the food is sold to the public to be consumed!
